The purpose of writing this story is to share with those suffering from medical problems is that “If in doubt, check it out”. I strongly urge patients to be proactive about their health care. One of the world’s greatest medical facilities is right here in Minnesota. Mayo Clinic has many gifted physicians available to diagnose and address patients’ concerns.
In October, 2010 I was told that my sarcoidosis have progressed to stage II. There was a possibility that I would have to start taking methotrexate sometime in the future. It was a grim diagnosis.
On March 15, 2011, I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Philippe R. Bauer in the Lung and Critical Care Unit. Dr. Bauer immediately identified that the first diagnostic tool was never administered. A bronchoscopy test was missing from the data. A bronchoscopy and a series other tests were ordered by him on that day.
Dr. Bauer and his team of physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists addressed my concerns with great sincerity. Everything was explained in a very open, honest and professional manner. I was treated with the utmost kindness, dignity, compassion and respect. Everything in Mayo runs like clockwork.
On March 17, 2011, I reported back to Dr. Bauer. The results stated that there are other correctable health issues that are causing my fatigue, not sarcoidosis. My sarcoidosis is just “there” to be monitored once a year with an x-ray, blood work and breathing tests. Normal breathing tests indicate that no medicine is required.
A doctor and his team of professionals can seriously affect a patient’s perception of a disease. A patient needs to know the truth about his or her condition. Dr. Bauer did an outstanding job of getting to the root of my medical issues and answering all of my questions. He is a highly ethical physician who practices Mayo’s philosophy … “the needs of the patient come first”. I now feel so energized and motivated to improve my health. There is hope for the future.
I will forever be grateful to Dr. Bauer and his team for their help. He represents Mayo’s finest and most talented physicians. Patients are truly in “good hands at Mayo Clinic”.
