Rheumatoid Arthritis runs dominantly in the males of our family. It would be nice to be able to predict and lessen the impact of this disease.
If something “runs in your family”, what do you do?
I am aggressive in my preventive measures, following a healthy diet, and reading, reading everything – keeping up to date information.
If I knew I were potentially predestined for a genetic malformation or disease such as for example Marfand’s or aortic aneurysms I would get a screening for whatever is available and within financial means. I would not go so far as genetic testing or anything.
My dad passed away from complications from type 1 diabetes. I’ve had type 1 for seven years. I’ve always tried to stay on top of it and challenge myself to use the most current treatments. I came to think of him as the old dog who wouldn’t learn new tricks. He didn’t watch what he ate, he smoked and didn’t exercise much. He used syringes even when pen needles were readily available. I decided to go on the pump because I wanted the best for myself and I don’t want to suffer the complications he did.
As a mom, I’ve had my 2-year-old participate in a study to screen for type 1 and he will participate yearly. The hope is that he will never have diabetes, but if he does, I hope to catch it early to offer him the best treatment.
if something runs in my family and is obvious I deal with it to eradicate the cause, and if it does not obvious I use symptomatic releif measures and try to find the cause by searching
