After this opera singer noticed something on her chin and asked her dentist to take an x-ray, they found an ossifying fibroma that had taken over all of her lower jaw. Susan Taborn needed to have her entire lower jaw and most of her bottom teeth removed. Mayo Clinic doctors and surgeons used her fibula to construct a new jaw. Susan now received a new set of bottom teeth, just in time for Christmas! Watch her inspiring story below:

an inspiring story …
Makes me proud to work at Mayo!
I loved working at Mayo too! It was only my own health that stole me away from critical care nursing.

Susan’s story is an inspiration to all. I’m lucky to know her, and to have sung in a choir with her here in Austin (if not near as well as she does).
I have known Susan since college, and was proud of her then, but WOW, I am so proud of her now. What an inspiration to all who face adversity, and what a joy to see her calm uplifting attitude and Spirit. Thanks Mayo and Susan for sharing this.
Susan – you are AMAZING and God is so GOOD!!!!
I sang with Susan in college at The University of Texas and I am so proud of her! She has been through so much and I am happy that God has blessed her and allowed her to be able to continue to sing! Love you Susan! You are such a positive influence…you are going to help so many who view this!
I, too, sang with Susan at The University of Texas with Lori and Scott (Hook ‘em!). She has always been such a positive and vivacious person. Seeing her strength and optimism in the face of such a difficult situation is truly an inspiration! Thank you for sharing this heart-warming story!
As a friend of Susan’s, I can’t say enough about what an inspiration she has been. Her positive attitude and unyielding faith sets the bar.
My heart melt when I heard her sang. A very inspiring story, I will definitely share this to my students and also they will see how technology can change a life with proper medical procedures and “faith”
What an unbelievable story and such a miracle..Indeed Mayo clinic is the very best in the world. May you continue to live your life bigger and better than ever.

I was inspired with your story… it give us hope because my eldest sister suffer an ossifying fibroma at her jaw..unti now…
Until now… we were still on the check up session… we will not be able to look for a specialist because of financial problem…
I hope my eldest sister can have her surgical operation too…
Susan’s recovery was challenging and I hope she gets a starring role in an opera soon. I am sure that she can excel.
Susan is a very remarkable individual with strengths of unheard proportions. I do pray that millions of individuals have the privilege of hearing her Angelic Voice once again on the Opera stage and soon! I’d know her voice separated from the pack; it’s still as light, yet powerful with projection unlike any others. Her rendition of The Magic Flute (Queen of the Night Aria)is superb. Keep believing in yourself and achieving your goals!
