A diagnosis of cancer can be devastating. For Robert Hoopes, a facilities manager from Glendale, Ariz., the diagnosis hit home – twice.
In 2006, Kara, his wife of more than three decades, discovered that she had advanced colon cancer. After a two year battle, she sadly passed away at the age of 54 leaving behind her husband, children and many friends.
Less than two-years later, Robert began experiencing acid reflux symptoms and abdominal discomfort. Initial tests results revealed a gastrointestinal blockage. Unfortunately, the final diagnosis proved serious – small bowel cancer. He continues with treatment at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and is enrolled in a clinical trial.
In this video, Robert shares two journeys. One as a caregiver to his first wife and then as a patient living with cancer. He explains how the many blessings in his life give him hope to continue fighting his disease.

Our family’s story is heartbreaking as it continues on. May my parents be resting in ever lasting peace. As far as the clinical trial goes…..it was the worst mistake ever made in my fathers cancer treatment. Do not ever, if you or someone you love, EVER participate or recommend clinical trials. It’s the fastest way to burn the fading hope.
Hi first of all I’m so sorry for the lost of your wife/mother. My sister is 26 and was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer on April 30 2012. They had her doing 12 week chemo trials and it made her so sick. She’s currently in the hospital in utah cause she had very bad abdominal pain a couple days before Christmas, so they did a ct scan and detected a inflamed gall bladder. So they set her up for to go under surgery and get her gall bladder removed, but they couldn’t do so because there’s a tumor in the was and her cancer has spread through out her stomach. It breaks my heart): she has two kids a daughter who is 4 and a son who is 7. They cannot lose their mommy. I cannot lose my sister! The doctors told her today that she only has a month or so left to live. But we as her family all have hope and faith she’s gonna beat the odds, and soon look back at her experiment and inform other cancer patients not to ever lose hope and faith. Also we’re gonna get her down to the city of hope cancer facility in California, that’s our next step.. Thank you for reading this story<3
Trinna: I read your story, tonight your sister will be in my prayers, may the Lord Jesus give you and all your family strength and courage. Your sister is so young and her kids can not lose their mother, I know, is very hard situation, I lost my mother when I was 19, still hurts, I’m 45 now and I’ve feeling an acute pain in my lower part of my intestine, tomorrow I’ll schedule an app. with my doctor, of course as a human, I think the worst, but only my faith in the Lord would keep me strong…We need God, may God bless you and all your family…
I agree with Marylene. There is always hope in The Lord Jesus Christ. Just plead your case before him and remember all his promises. “By his stripes we are healed” Get yourself a Bible and look up all of the healing scriptures and have your sister read them and believe in her heart that God is faithful to his word. I am a survivor of uterine cancer and lymphoma. The doctor calls me one of his miracle babies. If God did it for me, he will do it for anyone who will trust him. All you need is a small seed of faith. I will be praying for you and your sister.
