Prepping for Mayo's 25th Anniversary in Florida

By Jason Pratt @jasonpratt

Mayo Clinic is nearing a big milestone in Florida. On Thursday, Oct. 13, the Florida campus turns 25. The medical center campus in Jacksonville was the first extension of Mayo Clinic beyond Rochester, Minn.

In preparation for the anniversary celebration, we turned lose a "film crew" and "reporter" to quiz staff about Mayo's history on the First Coast and find out if staff know their Mayo Clinic trivia.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. See video below and decide for yourself...

A little background...
In the 1980s, Mayo Clinic leaders were exploring opportunities for growth, including new geographic locations. Into this mix came a loyal Mayo patient, generous benefactor and successful entrepreneur — J.E. Davis, one of the founders of the Winn-Dixie supermarket chain. The Davis family and other leaders in Jacksonville reached out to Mayo Clinic, and the Davis family donated 400 acres of undeveloped land for the new clinic.

From its start 25 years ago with 36 physicians and 145 allied health staff, the clinic has grown to become an integrated medical center with extensive patient care, research and education programs. Today, there are about 375 physicians and scientists working with 4,255 allied health colleagues, and the campus has an annual economic impact of $1.6 billion.
